I would love to see that show, reading a de Kooning bio now.

I was thinking exactly what you were expressing about my latest painting that I really liked. Could I do that again in a similar way ? A shortcut. I guess that’s what artists do when they recognize that they may have found their signature style.

Jazz is an apt example of the freeform mixed with intense technical knowledge repeated until intuitive.

Yeah the show confirmed some of my dislike of certain stylistic things about deKooning's work, despite of course its similarity to my own drawing. (perhaps partly why?). Yet for the first time I saw the things I expressed in my article clearly. The urgency is a conundrum for me. In gestural drawing it can be compelling. I think he had models for his drawings but he was veering far off the resemblances. In the show. his sculptures were as interesting if not more than his drawings.

I don’t have time to get the 10,000 hours under my belt and with limited drawing skills I rely on my creative mind. I am comfortable enough with my array of tools and an earthy palette to move forward. Sometimes I am loose enough, usually listening to music and in a meditative space to create without thinking (though my process allows thinking between steps). I have barely touched on the feelings of improvisation that a jazz musician rides upon.

Or way of working. Signature style sounds so confining. Yuck lol

Yeah that didn’t sound right 😁

Your parents were in East Lansing ! Mine grew up in Detroit and I grew up in Ann Arbor.

Small world indeed. Where are you located now? I’m staying with my dad in Charlotte, just south of Lansing but my residence I still consider Chicago.

We are on Whidbey Island just north of Seattle

Sounds beautiful.

I posted the interview. Should be in your email inbox. Can link you to the full transcript of the rest of that interview with Monteith but it covers a whole bunch of stuff. You might enjoy it. Found the bit about my grandad and wanted to share that with my people. Welcome aboard.

I think that is one of my grandfather’s biggest lessons. I will post an excerpt from an interview one of his former students gave to the Smithsonian about this. I’ll let you know when I do so maybe you’ll consider a month of paid subscription. I send you the first month of my paper zine for that price too. Can cancel anytime. Think about it.
